Economic times are not good as evidenced by the unemployment rate, mortgage foreclosures, and dwindling government budgets and services at all levels. Looking forward, as one person recently put it to me: “Things are going to get bad before they get worse.”
The photos on this page document scenes that are not unique to Petaluma. The scenes are becoming more prevalent.
Many photos were taken using a small pocket camera. In some instances, the photos were shot through the windshield.
I was not seeking out the subjects. Instead, I encountered them in the course of everyday travels in my East Side Neighborhood or Downtown.

I appreciate you capturing these images. People like this exist day-to-day in Petaluma. This is just a small portion of the population suffering from the reality of homelessness.
truly moving, Frank, and so many more out there.
Darn depressing, let alone people, but their animals as well so sad.
At least in the olden days they had the poor farms and people shared work load and had a warm place to sleep.
I am sure some of these indivuals want to be out there and not in shelters
The number of families coming to my Church’s food pantry just keeps growing –in some cases both parents work and still can’t keep food on the table and fuel in the car.
What a lot of people don’t realize is that many homeless are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Support the troops, my eye.
And if you drill down the number of children who are homeless is just criminal. Homeless kids don’t stay in school as many are moving from school to school, sometimes two a month. How do you keep up on assignments and homework when you’re always in a different classroom? It starts them out on the wrong foot for their entire lives.
Good point! As a matter of fact, the photo of the man in a wheelchair (taken from behind) had a US Marine Corp sticker on the back of the chair
